During one of my Skype sessions with Dray Kid Twins Brooke and Brie, we were discussing the different types of music in each decade. I mentioned Berry Gordy, Jr. and the “Motown Sound” of the 1960’s and they had no idea who or what I was talking about. Obviously they never “Heard it Through the Grapevine!” So, Dray’s music lesson began!
Berry Gordy founded Motown Record Corporation in 1960 and launched a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence. The girls were so excited to learn more about some of the many iconic singers of the era like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight and the list goes on for decades.
I gave them a homework assignment which coincided with Black History Month… research Motown, the artists’ stories and how some went from music to TV and film. The twins went further and researched the fashion styles of the 60’s and 70’s and wore the outfits in the videos below. I was so proud how they incorporated my Drayisms, my coaching advice and their research findings into their “Motown Sound” performances for Dray!
According to Mom and the girls, they LOVED learning about this very important time in pop culture and couldn’t wait for the next Skype lesson.
Our next Skype lesson: Carole King!
“You’ve Got a Friend” Brooke and Brie… Dray!
